Tottenham Reject Atletico Madrid Bids for Cristian Romero,

Published on Jun 26, 2025

Tottenham Hotspur have drawn a firm line in the sand regarding the future of star defender Cristian. Romero, rejecting approaches from Atletico Madrid and maintaining a valuation of $76 million. The Premier League club is under no pressure to sell and is standing firm despite growing interest and informal offers from La Liga.

Atletico Madrid Target Romero as Defensive Priority

Atletico Madrid, led by manager Diego Simeone, are actively pursuing a top-level centre-back this summer, and Cristian “Cuti” Romero sits atop their shortlist. Simeone has publicly praised the Argentine international, stating: “Do I want Romero? Of course. He’s a great player.” Reports from Spain suggest Atletico have made repeated inquiries and are in regular contact with Romero’s camp.

However, Tottenham have dismissed bids in the region of $48M–$54M, making it clear they will not consider any deal below $76 million. Spurs see Romero as a vital part of their project under incoming manager Thomas Frank, especially with Champions League football on the horizon.

Tottenham’s Stance: No Discount for Key Asset

Club chairman Daniel Levy is well known for his firm negotiating style, and this situation is no different. Romero is contracted until 2027, giving Tottenham full control over his future. While the player has shown signs of frustration with the club’s direction in past interviews, there’s no indication he is pushing for a move at this stage.

The North London club views Romero not only as a defensive pillar but also a leadership figure in the dressing room. With the squad preparing for a return to Europe, losing him without a suitable replacement is not an option.

Contingency Planning Underway

Despite Tottenham’s confidence in keeping Romero, they are exploring defensive reinforcements. M. Guehi (Crystal Palace) and Maxence Lacroix (Wolfsburg) have been identified as potential targets should Atletico return with an irresistible offer.

Still, club sources insist no player will leave below market value, and Romero’s price reflects both his quality and contract length.

Atletico’s Financial Challenge

Atletico Madrid, although eager to bring Romero to La Liga, are constrained by budget limitations and are unlikely to match Tottenham’s asking price without major player sales. Their top summer priorities include defensive upgrades and a new forward, making Romero a potential luxury rather than a guaranteed acquisition.

Unless their financial situation improves or Spurs soften their stance, a deal appears unlikely in the short term.

Conclusion

Tottenham are sending a clear message: Cristian Romero is not for sale—unless the price is right. As Atletico Madrid continue to push, the North London club remains committed to holding onto one of their most valuable assets. Whether Romero remains in white or eventually moves to red and white will depend on how far Atletico are willing to go.
